Anif is an idyllic village situated south of the city of Salzburg. It is inextricably linked with the most famous conductor of the 20th century – Herbert von Karajan. In this area you will find his idyllically situated farmhouse, still inhabited by his wife Eliette, and his modest grave. Up until his death in 1989, Karajan pulled the strings at the Salzburg Festival, brought international stars to the Mozart city, and internationalised the Festival.

It was cold in winter 1818 when the church-goers went to mass in the small St. Nicola church. The magic of Christmas was omnipresent. Only a couple of hours before the mass, the priest Joseph Mohr, asked the organist Franz Gruber to write a melody for 2 solo voices, a choir and a guitar accompanyment. When it was played, everyone spoke of a Christmas miracle and that's how the most famous Christmas Carol was born.
