Maybe the last holiday with Mum and Dad in Austria was a few years ago. And perhaps the memories have faded a little. Or were the long hikes boring and unexciting? If so, those memories must be urgently refreshed and renewed. SalzburgerLand comes up with an absolutely unsurpassed density of experiences. Mountains or lakes, city or countryside, summer or winter? Anyway, everything is possible. Fun and action are guaranteed all year round.
Just hiking is something a child does with their parents. But in SalzburgerLand, the mountains become a huge adventure playground. Here you can go climbing or biking, take multi-day treks from hut to hut, climb snow-capped peaks, sail through the sky as a paraglider, and, and, and.
Mountain adventures top tips
- Seeham High ropes course
Courage and skill are necessary to go climbing, balancing, sliding or swinging through the seven different courses at different levels of difficulty piece by piece. Great views from an unusual perspective, and especially lots of fun are waiting as a reward.
- Flying Flox Gastein
Gastein is known for its famous waterfall and (Imperial) charm of the architecture. That may be quite nice, but it is only really cool when you can experience it all with a bird’s eye view from the Flying Fox.
- Out-of-Bounds Festival
Strong nerves are needed when the elite downhill mountain bikers show their daring maneuvers while racing down the mountain. The legendary Out-of Bounds Festival takes place every year around the second weekend in June in Saalfelden-Leogang.
Crystal clear lake with drinking water quality, rippling mountain streams and thundering waterfalls and gorges – Austria is one of the most water rich countries in the world. This also applies to SalzburgerLand. And the best part – many of these waters are ideal for water sports and all kinds of fun.
Water action top tips
- Stand up Paddling on Lake Fuschl
Standing on a surfboard, paddle in one hand and then keeping your balance is not easy. But once you get the hang of it, stand up paddling is great fun. The calm Lake Fuschl is ideal for this kind of trendy sport. The relevant equipment can be borrowed for just €10.
- Kayaking on the Saalach river
When the foaming water of the wild rapids squirts in your face, that is a pure adrenaline rush. The pristine Saalach is one of the most beautiful rivers for kayaking.
- Chill out in the Anif Woodland Pool
Not far from the City of Salzburg, youngsters meet in this idyllic woodland pool for swimming, chilling and beach volleyball. Totally nostalgic, but cool. Whoever wants a real thrill can glide across the lake on the forest zip line.
Great tips for events, venues, shops and more can be found with Miss Flora!
Skiing is also maybe something that one learned long ago on a joint winter holiday with their parents. But at some point you grow out of the “slide down the slopes on two planks”. Instead, try free-riding, snowboarding, ice climbing or snow tubing.
Winter fun top tips
- Freeride Experience Zell am See
Skiing off-piste – the pure sporting challenge. Together with local guides and like-minded people you head out for three days into the unspoil nature.
- Toboggan Run Wildkogel
300 meters down in 30 minutes? The fastest tobogganers manage that on the longest toboggan run in the world at 14km in Neukirchen on the Bramberg.
- Snowpark Kitzsteinhorn
On the Kitzsteinhorn free skiers really get their money’s worth. The 160 metre long and 6 metre high Halfpipe offers plenty of room for spectacular moves.
The City of Salzburg also has to offer more than Mozart, churches, museums and festivals. In addition to plenty of bars there is always some action going on.
Not necessarily recommended for everyone to go to, but still a cool thing: Free-Running from city mountain to city mountain.
City fun top tips
- Mountain Wave
Surfing in the middle of the city and on a relatively narrow strip of water? The Almwelle makes it possible! With surfboard, wetsuit and helmet you’re in – even in winter.
- Hangar 7
Techies love the legendary aircraft of the Red Bull Squadron – from the CC-6B to the Alpha-jets and the B25 Mitchell Bomber. They can all be viewed up close in Hangar 7. In addition, a drink at the chic bar is also cool.
- Segway Tour
If you’re ever in Salzburg, you could take a good look around the city. Instead of walking, take a Segway for that much more fun factor.
When youngsters travel, action and adventure is required instead of recreation. But of course, also the accomodation should first of all be not too expensive and secondly have a wide range of offers. The Young Austria enterprises are ideal for this.
But many more hotels have specialised entirely on the younger audience. (Link Feratel youth hotels)
Top Tip: Club Kitzsteinhorn
An absolute highlight is the weather independent Club Kitzsteinhorn in Kaprun: here there is, amongst other things, a unique indoor beach volleyball hall. But that’s not everything of course.
There are also special programs for school groups. Both in winter and in summer, school sport weeks are marked by lots of sports entertainment and cool activities.
