Enjoying the sunshine in a valley blanketed deep in snow, with a pair of cross-country skis on your feet: recreation in perhaps its purest form. The Lungau region - awarded the Austrian Ski Trail Seal of Quality - wins over the hearts of XC enthusiasts with some 150 km of classic trails and 100 km tracked for skating technique, providing the perfect conditions in which to work on technique, endurance and speed. Lungau's five alpine ski trails promise exceptional snow conditions until well into springtime.
During winter driver's training, you learn to show the winter a "cold shoulder" with fun braking and drifting exercises.
With its seven side valleys and an enormous selection of mountain and summit tours, the Lungau region is generally considered to be an Eldorado for backcountry skiers. In springtime especially, the 2,740 meters-high Preber draws skiers with its magnificent panoramic views extending from the Grossglockner to the Karawanken. And we should by no means dismiss those mighty peaks of the Niedere and Hohe Tauern, the Schladminger Tauern, or the gently domed summits of the Nockberge.
Over 30 mountaintop experiences for backcountry skiers and 22 routes described in detail, all contained in our ski-touring guide. A special highlight is the Preberlauf Ski-Touring Uphill, an event held annually in March. The Lungau's Preberlauf has quietly become the second largest ski-touring race in Austria, now almost a tradition for many ski tourers.
