According to a study by the BKK Health Insurance Company (“Health Report 2014“) mental disorders from 1976 until 2013 have increased more than fivefold in Germany. At the forefront is burn-out with symptoms which are very similar to depression – that feeling that everything is too much – as well as sleep and anxiety disorders.
But mindfulness is essential against an impending Burnout throughout the body. Many partner hotels in the Alpine Health Region have corresponding relaxation offers. Hiking, yoga, Qi Gong, or even a visit to the Krimmler waterfalls can work wonders.
Slowdown in Nature
A study by the Paracelsus Medical University in Salzburg proves that the Krimml waterfalls give off a so-called Para-Sympathetic tone, a state of relaxation which defines tranquillity and recuperation. “The heart rate slows and by better synchronisation of the abdominal and chest breathing, as well as a higher depth of breath better sends blood through the lungs. The oxygen saturation in the blood rises”, says Dr. Arnulf Josef Hartl, Director of the Institute of Ecomedicine of the Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg. As such the nature in SalzburgerLand is almost itself a stress-reduction program.

The Salzburger Lungau has always been considered an original habitat with distinct traditions and a unique natural landscape. In 2012, the region was appointed as the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Salzburger Lungau for very good reasons. For holiday-makers, this award means a guaranteed genuine holiday experience in the mountains and at beautiful lakes, with traditional customs and creative people who have not forgotten their roots.
The nature of the Salzburger Lungau is also in absolute contrast to life in the city. Short breaks and time-off aid the search for meaning and help to relax and slow-down.
There is also something else unique in the Lungau region – the location between the Radstädter Tauern and the Carinthian Nockberge mountains provides a wind-protected climate, with the best air and water quality being basic requirements. Moreover, all 15 Lungauer towns sit at more than 1,000 metres above sea level, which has been proven to not only have better air quality at this altitude, but also to relieve breathing problems and optimise endurance training.
In the Salzburger Lungau there are countless ways to get moving in the unspoilt nature, above all when hiking and biking. A well-marked hiking trail network leads to about 60 crystal-clear mountain lakes and over 70 farmed Alpine huts.
