Ski tour with fantastic views

The Sonnkogel (1,727m) in Saalfelden Leogang

On the penultimate stop of our #5weeks5peaks Winter Challenge in SalzburgerLand we went to Saalfelden Leogang. This time the alpine skis stayed in the cellar as touring skis were the order of the day. Our goal was the Sonnkogel in Leogang at 1,727 m.

Everything was prepared for a wonderful day of skiing in Saalfelden Leogang, between gentle grass mountains and the rocky forms of the Leoganger Steinberge and the Steinernen Meer Mountains. Here, everyone finds their perfect ski tour – from beginners to professionals. It was -12°C in the valley with sunshine and wonderful powder snow. One of the touring ski classics in Leogang was on the program today with a tour to the Sonnkogel at 1,727 m.

The anticipation among the outdoor influencers @sophie.in.action, @bouncing_betti, @verena.hlmgr, @magdilena for the tour in Saalfelden Leogang was huge. We also had a touring ski guide as a “Local” – Ingolf Hammerschmied, who is also an instructor in the mountain rescue and knows the tour on the Sonnkogel like the back of his hand. He tuned us in to the most important points of the tour before strapping on our touring skis at the meeting point in the Schwarzleograben and completing the avalanche equipment check together with all participants.

Shortly after 9 a.m. we finally got going and into the crunching powder snow. Firstly, we crossed forests and meadows and in the clearings we already had beautiful views of the Leoganger Steinberge Mountains. In between, our guide Ingolf Hammerschmied provided us with interesting information about the required safety equipment and its function, and also on the different snow conditions and possible avalanche hazards in various weather conditions. Further up, on the more open terrain, the deep winter Steinerne Meer Mountain showed its most beautiful side in the sunshine.

In total, we had to conquer almost 900 metres of altitude, which means an ascent of about three hours, including breaks, of course. After this energy-consuming ski tour we finally reached our destination, and the panorama at the summit of the Sonnkogel with the view of the Kuhfeldhörndl is worth every drop of sweat. After the obligatory group photo we went downhill again and we were all really looking forward to this descent. In spring-like temperatures we followed our tour guide’s route down into the valley. Once there, we indulged in a culinary reward at Mama Thresl.

And quite honestly, it’s just indescribable. That experience of conquering a mountain without a chairlift or gondola, with your own strength and then to wade through the powder down into the valley. This delivers a very special kick which is extra fun when compared to regularly going on the perfectly groomed ski slopes in SalzburgerLand.

Touring Ski evenings in Saalfelden Leogang

A special extra in the Saalfelden Leogang winter sports region are the touring ski trips on the Steinberg slope. On Tuesdays and Fridays, the Steinberg slope (slopes 211 & 212) are available from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. for ski touring, and of course the mountain restaurants are also open longer for touring skiers. Because as we all know – fresh mountain air gives you a real appetite and a stop-off is simply part of a perfect ski touring evening.

Our tip – if you want to start ski touring but don’t have the right equipment, you can rent everything on-site. The sports shops in Saalfelden and Leogang all deliver excellent service, a wide selection of rental equipment and sale articles, as well as competent and professional advice. Here, you will certainly find what you are looking for.
