PLEASURE BIKING IN THE GROSSARLTAL

IN THE VALLEY OF THE MOUNTAIN HUTS

The Grossarltal itself is already a natural spectacle. Discovering this gem in the mountains from the saddle unveils 160 kilometers of marked routes, 21 designated bike trails, and 13,000 meters of elevation gain in the Großarltal-Dorfgastein bike swing. Trails lead from one of the 40 serviced, rustic alpine huts to the next and from peak to peak deep into the mountains.

The Grossarltal is impressive in many ways. Even on the way into the valley, it’s hard to keep your eyes on the ground. The surrounding mountains are too imposing, too impressive, and above all, too beautiful. They hint at the adventures and experiences waiting up there. Saukarkopf, Frauenkogel, and the other peaks – but that’s just the beginning. And for those unfamiliar with the region, it can be explored on one of the 10 mountain bike and e-bike tours with a guide that are offered weekly.

, the Panorama bike park provides an ideal environment for cycling enthusiasts. With lines of varying difficulty levels, the park is perfect for improving riding techniques, learning new skills, and having a lot of fun. GET OFF YOUR BIKE…

…because aside from the 140 marked mountain biking kilometers that let you climb 13,000 meters in elevation, there’s a lot to see and to taste. This is ensured by the 40 serviced alpine pastures (more than half of which are directly accessible by bike), to which the Großarltal not only owes its nickname ‘Valley of the Mountain Huts’ but also where hungry bikers are supplied with all kinds of delicacies. One such place is the Loosbühelalm. This can be reached after a rewarding tour through the Ellmau Valley. At the alpine pasture, bikers are rewarded with the best goat milk and goat cheese.

GROSSARLER ALMENRUNDE

For those who feel the urge to visit many of these alpine pastures at once, the Großarler Almenrunde is particularly suitable. This tour from the ‘Großarler Genuss’ leads up the Sonnenweg to the Saukaralm. Next, you reach the Großwildalm and the Karseggalm, before a magnificent panorama unfolds at the Großwildalm. After visits to the Karseggalm, the Unterwandalm, and the Maurachalm, the route circles back to the starting point of the tour. Overall, you spend 5.5 hours on this 35.8-kilometer loop through the mountains, covering 1,680 meters of elevation.

BIKE & HIKE SAUKARALM

This Bike & Hike tour takes you up high to the highest alpine pasture in the Großarltal region – the Saukaralm, located at 1,820 meters above sea level. While you can reach it by (e-) mountain bike, the journey continues on foot or via the via ferrata (protected climbing route) to the 2,048-meter-high Saukarkopf. The panorama of the Hohen Tauern, the Hochkönig, and the Tennen- and Hagengebirge compensates for the nearly 1,000 meters of elevation gain along the way. More information is available here.

ADDITIONAL CHALLENGE: THE TOUR TO THE BICHLALM

For those who still have the energy and desire for another biking adventure after speeding along the trail, we highly recommend the tour to the Bichlalm, situated at 1,731 meters above sea level. This tour initially follows a forest road towards Elmau, before ascending approximately 800 meters to the foot of the Remsteinkopf. Why endure this? Because the panoramic views and delicious Brettljause (platter snack) are absolutely worth it. Convinced?

OUR TIP FOR EARLY RISERS:

Breakfast tours. The start is at 7 a.m. Through the still cool forest, you ascend to the alpine pasture, where not only a mountain panorama awaits, but also breakfast for the participants.
