Michelin Stars Shine Bright for SalzburgerLand’s Top Chefs

The Guide Michelin Returns to Austria

The stars are back! Austria’s culinary scene celebrated a sparkling comeback in January 2025, when the world’s most prestigious restaurant guide, the Guide Michelin, made its grand return to Austria — and did so in style at Salzburg’s Hangar-7. There was plenty to celebrate, especially for the hosts: Salzburg’s chefs and restaurants took home a total of 17 distinctions, including five two-star restaurants, eight one-star restaurants, and four Green Stars awarded for sustainability and outstanding local sourcing.

After years of effort by SalzburgerLand Tourismus GmbH, the goal of bringing back a full Austrian edition of the Guide Michelin has finally been achieved. For the first time since 2009, the red guide once again shines across the entire country — from Burgenland to Vorarlberg, from Upper Austria to Carinthia. In recent years, only Vienna and Salzburg had been included in the “Main Cities of Europe” edition. Now, Austria’s diverse culinary landscape is once again represented on the global stage.

Across the nation, the Guide Michelin inspectors awarded a total of 82 stars, 33 Green Stars, and 43 Bib Gourmands. The country’s highest honor — three Michelin stars — went to two exceptional restaurants: Amador retained its three-star status, while Steirereck joined the elite ranks of the world’s top-rated dining destinations. SalzburgerLand’s chefs and restaurants took home a total of 17 distinctions, including five two-star restaurants, eight one-star restaurants, and four Green Stars awarded for sustainability and outstanding local sourcing.

17 Guide Michelin Stars for SalzburgerLand’s Chefs

That the award ceremony took place in the SalzburgerLand was no coincidence. It was a tribute to the region’s long-standing commitment to excellence and its exceptional culinary reputation. Salzburg boasts not only outstanding chefs but also one of the highest densities of organic farmers in Europe — producers whose seasonal and regional ingredients form the backbone of the area’s celebrated Alpine cuisine.

The first full Michelin evaluation in over 15 years underscores this strength: five two-star restaurants, eight one-star restaurants, and four Green Stars — proof of the remarkable concentration of top chefs and fine dining establishments across the province. Together, they place Salzburg firmly among the world’s leading culinary destinations.

Adding to the accolades, Sommelier Alexander Koblinger of Döllerer’s Genießerrestaurant in Golling was honored with the Guide Michelin Sommelier Award 2025 for his exceptional wine expertise.

The full list of Michelin-recognized restaurants in Austria is now available via the Guide Michelin website and app.

Green Stars for Alpine Cuisine

Sustainability was also a central theme in Salzburg’s success story. Four restaurants received the Green Star, Michelin’s seal for sustainable gastronomy: Kräuterreich by Vitus Winkler in St. Veit, Restaurant dahoam by Andreas Herbst in Leogang, Rauchkuchl by Tobias Bacher in Stuhlfelden, and Weitmoser Schlössl by Stefan Viehhauser in Bad Hofgastein.

This award recognizes not just culinary mastery but also a conscious philosophy: a deep respect for nature, close collaboration with local producers, and a focus on regional and seasonal ingredients.
