Salzburg’s mountain lifts are extraordinary. In winter as well as in summer they will leave you wanting for nothing. The ten Salzburg’s best summer mountain lifts are of the very highest quality and have fulfilled many criteria, ensuring you can expect plenty along the lines of adventure, family, enjoyment, panoramas and nature experience from them. With 100 very strict criteria to fulfill, the lifts must also continue to offer new experiences, so the seal of approval is not easy to achieve. That’s why you can expect a very special and unforgettable time from the following mountain lifts this summer.
Gasteiner Bergbahnen – Stubnerkogel & Schlossalm
„Take a look and trust yourself” on the Stubnerkogel in Bad Gastein. Some bravery is needed to cross the 140 m long suspension bridge or the rock path. The views here are also absolutely magical and the Glocknerblick viewing platform guarantees a stunning view to Austria‘s highest mountain, the Großglockner. Also enjoy the marvelous view from the „Talblick” platform. The finishing touch to this alpine experience is added by the rock trail, yet another marvelous opportunity to take in even more truly imposing views. There is also another highlight for small guests – the fun center is the right place with great activities for kids.
„Find yourself among the rocks and stone” on the Schlossalm in Bad Hofgastein. On the Family Mountain Schlossalm in Bad Hofgastein, you will hike via beautiful hiking paths along the shores of the Schlossalmsee, search for mysterious creatures in the rock and conquer a variety of 6 different via ferrata climbs, ranging from rookie to expert. Likewise, the big playground on the Schlossalm offers many opportunities for the kids to run, play and work off some of that pent-up youthful energy. Right next to the lift mountain station on the Schlossalm, children and adults can both hone their balance skills in the Slackline Park, with many different levels of difficulty to challenge you.

Kaprun – Kitzsteinhorn
Board the lift in the village center, float comfortably with the gondola & enjoy an unique ascent up to the world of eternal ice. Surrounded by the highest peaks of Austria, the Kitzsteinhorn takes you into the majestic world of mountains, peaks and ice. Direct on the border of the Hohe Tauern National Park, and located at above 3,000 m, GIPFELWELT 3000 promises glorious views and amazing insights into high-Alpine nature, with its Nationalpark Gallery, Cinema 3000 and the aptly named TOP OF SALZBURG panoramic platform. Exciting highlight: the ICE ARENA (July – August) and daily offered tours with National Park Rangers.
In the late spring when the winter season slowly draws to its end for the winter sports enthusiasts, the mountain bikes start coming out. A high-Alpine route from the Alpincentre into the valley, offers up 12 km, 1,500 altitude metres and three separate freeride trails of pure riding pleasure.
Leogang – Asitz lift
The Asitz mountain offers up a wealth of fun- and adventure-packed activities in summer and in winter. Discover and enjoy nature on the wonderful hiking trails and taste the local delicacies in the mountain huts. There are 30 enjoyable interactive stations in the Senses Experience World, a walkable waterfall and games station at Leo’s Water World and fun and excitement aplenty to be had on the summer toboggan run “Leo Klang”. You can experience one of the world’s fastest longest zip wires: Flying Fox XXL, with its length of 1,600 m and maximum speed of 130 km/hour. Bikers will be delighted by Bikepark Leogang – one of Europe’s most renowned and diverse bike parks, which had the honour of hosting the UCI Mountain Bike & Trials World Championships. The nature cinema on the Sonnkogel is a real “panorama cinema”, which has been lovingly integrated into nature. On the different ones you will find comfortable wooden loungers and hammocks to relax. Since 2008, five TONspur concerts have been delighting audiences in the summer amidst a breathtaking mountain backdrop. Since the summer of 2020, live recordings from the previous year have been available on the TONspur Islands for one year at a time. Comfortable wooden loungers, a high-quality sound system and a breathtaking panoramic view provide relaxation!
Maria Alm – Prinzenberg Natrun
Natrun in Maria Alm is full of fun-packed variety for all ages. Experience exciting family adventures on Maria Alm‘s local mountain. Little ones romp around on the adventure playground and the big ones in the forest slide park or in the forest ropes course. The forest rope course offers up spectacular leaps from tree to tree. The whole family can test their skills and accuracy at the Jufen Archery Course, or take a detour to the Prinzensee. MTB-enthusiasts can try the Flow One MTB-Trail which leads down 300 m into the valley. On the forest adventure path the children can have fun whilst learning about nature, whilst the wildlife closure, open the entire year round, offers up deep insights into the indigenous animal world.
Rauris – Hochalmbahnen
The gondola lift takes you up to the Hochalm at 1,800 m in just a couple of minutes. This is the ideal starting point for relaxing hikes with breathtaking panoramas. Explore the world of birds of prey and get very close to the „Kings of theAir” at the Bird-of-Prey station or try your luck at the gold-panning site or while washing minerals. Enjoy pure water fun on the water playground, explore the barefoot was or follow Tilly’s Forest Path to discover fascinating insights into the animal and plant kingdom. Round off your trip with a gentle stroll around the gorgeous Hochalmmountain lake.
Saalbach Hinterglemm
Reach Reiterkogel, Kohlmais, Schattberg, Westgipfel and Zwölferkogel peaks in comfort and safety in one of six cable cars. Anybody who does so will be enthralled by all the special things on offer such as Montelino‘s adventure path with water playground and deer feeding, Mount Kodok and Expedition Kodik, summit playgrounds, herb paths, themed trails and over 400 km of walking paths. For bikers there’s a fantastic trail network, countless tracks, freeride and single trails as well as the legendary BIG-5-BIKE challenge.
Wagrain mountain lifts – Snow Space Salzburg
The “Flying Mozart” cable car and the Grafenberg Gondala take you to one of the set off points to the most beautiful walks in the Snow space Salzburg. The nature and mountain experience world, ‘WAGRAINi’s Grafenberg’, has more than 30 adventure stations, which begin directly at the mountain station. Take the “Flying Mozart” gondola to Bikepark Wagrain for plenty of action, fun and adrenaline. Flowing downhill and freeride trails, single trails riddled with a cool mix of jumps and tables offer will leave bikers of all abilities wanting for nothing. NEW: Jupidu – KUHbidu. How much milk does a cow give per day and how is cheese actually made from it? Children and their parents can playfully find answers to these and many other questions about cows.
St. Johann – Ghost mountain
Take the gondola high up to Ghost Mountain, where after a short walk a ghost train waits to take you to the ghost village. Ghost Mountain guarantees a fun-packed day for the whole family. The youngest visitors will be drawn into the spell of the earth spirits’ realm by the many ghosts and goblins in Gnome Alley. Slightly older guests will love the water games, Ghost Lake, the climbing frames and swings, whilst adults can sit back and relax on the recliners, enjoy the beautiful panoramic views and cool off in Water World. For adventurous kids, there will be a new children‘s climbing path on the ghost mountain, secured by a steel rope, they can climb a 40 meter high rock face.
Zell am See – Schmittenhöhe
Prepare to be amazed on a hike through one of the largest outdoor artistic areas in Europe. As well as action, fun and games for the whole family, you can also expect an ambitious cultural programme in the Schmittenhöhe, Zell am See. Numerous oversized sculptures by international artists can be viewed along the hiking paths, and make every hike into an inspirational experience. With the summer cable cars, you head on up to adventurous hikes on the High-Altitude Promenade, herb hiking trails and magical journeys in the „Magical Forest”. Schmidolins Baptism of Fire is a fantastic hiking discovery trail for children and families alike, where different stations and tests of courage await. In the breath-taking natural scenery young and old, beginners or advanced can experience pure riding enjoyment on E-Motocross-bikes. Adults race around the Freeride E-Motocross obstacle course and children from the ages of 6-14 put their balance and equilibrium to the test zipping around obstacles on e-bikes at Schmidolin’s Rocket Bike.
Mühlbach am Hochkönig – Alpine meadow playground
Experience fun and adventure for the entire family on the Karbachalm, high above Mühlbach in Hochkönig, at Alpine meadow playground. Numerous play stations offer hours of fun for the children. The youngest children can give their creativity free rein in the water and sand playground and the children’s thirst for movement will be quenched on the climbing tower, slacklines and with the Alpine Frisbee. You should definitely take the opportunity to do a small hike, and the surrounding hiking paths are all accessible to pushchairs. The Karbachalm is highly recommended for those who like to explore the world from their saddle; take your bike comfortably up in the lift to where a cycling path awaits, guaranteeing fun for all. Tip: Ride on the Hochkönig Mountain Carts down to the valley on the 6.5 km long Family Trail.
Lofer Alpine World
With the Almbahnen I and II you can head directly into the Lofer Alpine World, where you conquer an ascent of 720 metres (from 630m up to 1350m altitude) and find yourself in Austria’s most beautiful hiking Alm with all its possibilities to enjoy. There are 7 looped hiking trails with 4 stunning panoramic lookout peaks waiting to be discovered. Or what about a visit to the adventure playground where the kids can tumble around. Anyone looking to experience up-close the power and beauty of water should definitely take a closer look at the ‘Waterfall’ trail. Bikers use the Almbahn I and II for the ascent up to where they find connections to Waidring/Steinplatte, Winklmoosalm and Unken/Heutal. Also for anyone with walking disabilites or those in wheelchairs, the barrier-free cable cars and restauraunts provide a true natural spectacle.
Our tip: One of the best places to enjoy the sunset is at the ‘Rote Marmorsee’ (Red Marble Lake) on the Schönbühel. Located at 1,600 metres above sea level, this lovely spot is easily reached via the Märchenwanderweg (Fairytale Hiking Trail) Nr. 4.
Schafbergbahn St. Wolfgang
The ride on the SchafbergBahn cog railway all the way up to just below the 1,783 m summit takes 35 minutes and you will probably wish it could last even longer, considering the extraordinary views you are treated´to by this steepest cog railway in Austria: With every vertical meter, your perspective of the world changes. At the top, passengers have 11 different lakes at their feet and, in good visibility, are also able to enjoy the sight of the mighty Hohe Tauern and Grossglockner mountains.
Gamskogel, Zauchensee
From the adventure playground “Champions-Cup of the alpine animals” with 3 trails to the lake Seekarsee and the panoramic 4-summit tour: the Gamskogel offers unforgettable mountain experiences. The starting point is the Gamskogelhütte at 1,900 m above sea level, that can be reached comfortably with the Gamskogelbahn. Tip: The sun terrace of the Gamskogelhütte, a place to enjoy!
Wildkogel-Arena Neukirchen Bramberg
Slides, mountain carts, the “Kogel-Mogel” adventure arena, hiking & biking – the 4-km-long mountain cart route, the panorama trail, or the slide path, all of them will offer great adventures for all ages. Especially among the youngsters, the wooden playground at the adventure arena is particularly popular. At the Wildkogel-Arena there are barrier-free hiking trails, easy to moderate summit tours and numerous, signposted biking routes for bikers & e-bikers (charging stations!)
