High-altitude hiking in Saalfelden Leogang

The Saalach Valley high-altitude trail from Asitz in Leogang to the Biberg in Saalfelden

When the outdoor influencers Verena Helminger (@verena.hlmgr) and Lukas Kuon (@lukaskuon) started on the Saalach Valley high-altitude trail, the sun rose. The weather god was in a good mood when we started from the Asitz valley station in Leogang. We admit that we were chauffeured the first metres up by the cable car to the mountain station, as we still covered enough hiking kilometres and altitude metres throughout the day.

From the gondola into the cinema! Admittedly, at first glance this does not sound like a wonderful hike in SalzburgerLand. But the natural cinema in Saalfelden Leogang is definitely worth a visit, and impresses both young and old alike. Here it’s all about sitting and enjoying at the Sonnkogel. This panorama is simply stunning! You enjoy the view of the Leoganger Steinberge lying in hammocks, on wooden loungers or cosy benches. The perfect counterpoint to the often stressful everyday work.

Now we head back onto the Saalach Valley high-altitude trail in the direction of Saalfelden. This beautiful hiking tour from the Asitz over alpine pastures, through forests and along the ridge towards Biberg not only makes one’s hiking heart beat faster. The 360 degree panorama during the tour is also an absolute eye-catcher for hobby photographers and geographers. A challenge – Who can correctly name all the mountain peaks without a smartphone app and map?

Behaviour on the mountain – our tips:

Here you will find all information about how to behave on the mountain – especially with regard to grazing cattle.

After countless photos, some sweating and almost completely used up water reserves, we head to the Biberg Mountain Inn for a hiking snack. The ploughman’s board is full of regional delicacies, cheese dumplings and spinach dumplings, and is the best thing to replenish your energy reserves. And for those who need a rush of adrenalin afterwards, at the Huggenberg Mountain Inn you can jump onto the summer toboggan run which shoots you down into the valley. 1,600 metres and 61 curves provide a lot of tobogganing fun for the whole family.
