the healing powers of the Salzburg thermal springs

Thousands of years ago, people were already well aware of the healing properties of hot thermal springs. What had once been discovered through mere observation, can now be proven with science. Thermal water does not only help prevent cardiovascular diseases, but it is also very effective in the treatment of rheumatism, pain as a result of slipped discs as well as respiratory disorders. Here you can find out where exactly in SalzburgerLand the water’s natural properties are used to heal, relieve and prevent!

Saint Barbara’s holy water: Heiltherme Bad Vigaun

Only a few kilometres from the city of Salzburg, you will find the Tennengau community of Bad Vigaun. This is where the Saint Barbara spring emerges from a depth of 1,354 metres. Its water has a soothing temperature of 34°C and contains various valuable and natural compounds. This special mixture is taken advantage of in the spa and rehabilitation centres, as well as in the healing thermal baths, in order to alleviate pains in the joints, the spine and the muscles, such as in the cases of rheumatism or osteoporosis. It, therefore, comes as no surprise that so many people feel as if reborn after a visit to the healing thermal baths. In 2000, the thermal baths of Bad Vigaun were completely renovated, enabling guests to enjoy a state-of-the-art infrastructure absolutely delightful bathing and relaxation areas. Roman baths, indoor pools as well as outdoor pools are enriched with the undiluted thermal water and thus provide pure relaxation.

The treasure of the Hohe Tauern mountains: the Gastein thermal water

The healing powers of the Gastein thermal springs have been known around the world for centuries. Their effects are also routinely confirmed by the guests and treatment visitors. The precious water emerges from the depths of the Hohe Tauern National Park to the surface. It is not just the mineral constituents that give the water its healing and preventative properties, but also the radon — a natural noble gas that fights inflammation and also stimulates the body’s very own defence system. Today, both of the Gastein spa centres are aided by two excellent institutions in the professional and state-of-the-art use of the thermal water.

Testing the waters: the Alpentherme in Bad Hofgastein

The Bad Hofgastein spa centre is one of the best equipped spa and rehabilitation centres in Europe. It is directly connected to the Alpentherme. Among other things, radon-containing thermal water treatments are provided by the centre, whose effects last for up to a year and help against inflammatory and rheumatoid disorders as well as polyneuropathy. Whereas the stimulating properties of the noble gas radon are applied in a very targeted manner during the various treatments, the water in the public thermal baths is completely free of any prescriptive radon, providing unlimited bathing pleasure. But even single-day guests to the Alpentherme will benefit of the rich mineral composition of the water and the relaxing effects of a thermal visit. In combination with the other wellness and fitness offers, the visit to the Alpentherme thus promises a holistic feel-good experience for the guests. New, and completely unique in Austria, are the two thermal water swimming lakes, which will become operative in July 2017. Diving into the pure thermal water is guaranteed to be an incredible experience. The lake will be organically cleansed — without the addition of chlorine, allowing even people with allergies to take full advantage of the water’s properties.

Luxury thermal water: the Felsentherme in Bad Gastein

At the end of the Gasteinertal valley, right by the thermal springs, lie the Felsentherme Bad Gastein. More than a million litres of Gastein thermal water flow into the pools of the small but impressive facility with very high standards when it comes water quality. The enormous amount of supplied fresh water almost makes the use of chemical additives unnecessary. Here, guests can also benefit from the positive effects of the thermal water from the depths of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Even though the law dictates the removal of radon gas from the water used for swimming and bathing, the precious mineral content of the water provides vitalisation for the cells and harmonises the bodily functions nevertheless. Tired muscles relax, circulation is improved, the body finds rest, vitality increases. In combination with additional offers, such as, for example, sauna, steam bath, water gymnastics or the in-house gym, any stay is guaranteed to become a soothing and health-promoting escape from the stresses of everyday life!
