The still-young Pinzgau town of Mittersill promises all kinds of variety, coupled with the incomparable, unspoilt nature of the National Park! The National Park Worlds brings the unique Alpine world surrounding Austria’s highest peak (the Grossglockner, elev.  3,798m) and another 266 3,000ers, over 342 glaciers and one of the world’s mightiest waterfalls, all under one roof. An eagle’s-eye panorama allows viewers to soar above imposing landscapes, valleys and peaks.

Urban Flair for Shopping Tours

For yet another special experience, how about a shopping tour of the stores in Mittersill town center? Souvenirs, organic products – from homemade chocolate to bacon and farmhouse bread, toys, clothing – from dirndls and lederhosen to tuxedos and evening dresses – sporting equipment, accessories for the home and garden, fascinating books to read during your holidays, and much more.

From spring 2021, you can combine your shopping trip perfectly with a visit to the Felberturm Museum. Directly next to the Felberkirche, a small museum district has been created in the last decades. With over 5,000 exhibits, the Regional Museum is one of the most extensive collections of local history in the province of Salzburg.

Important Visitors to the Castle Mittersill

For a short timeout from shopping, we recommend coffee & cake at Schloss Mittersill. This fairy-tale castle hotel is enthroned high above Mittersill, looking back on a centuries-old tradition filled with historical lows and highs. After the Second World War, then-owner Baron von Pantz opened the most exclusive club in the world. The “Sport & Shooting Club” attracted the jet set to Pinzgau: Aside from the Shah of Iran, the Duke of Windsor, the Aga Khan, Clark Gable and Bob Hope, many other international celebrities spent their holidays at Schloss Mittersill.

Hiking Tip to Hintersee

For a beautiful hike, there is nowhere better than picturesque Lake Hintersee in Felbertal.  Around 550 m long and as much as 10 m deep, Hintersee is the biggest of the Mittersill lakes, while the countryside which surrounds it was declared a natural monument in 1933 by the Salzburg provincial legislature, since which time it has been a protected area. On the northern side of the lake, we find the National Park Theme Path: easy-to-understand info boards provide fascinating information about special aspects of the lake and its surroundings.

Cross-Country Paradise

Cross-country skiers in Mittersill find all the variety they could wish for, including the leisurely Pinzga-Loipe in the valley, the Blizzard Trail in Mittersill town center (with snowmaking capability, floodlit after dark), and the challenging High Moors Trail. The snowy High Moors Trail lies on a sunny plateau at 1200 m above sea level, offering magical views of the snow-capped 3,000-meter peaks in Hohe Tauern National Park.
