{"id":95092,"date":"2016-12-23T09:22:11","date_gmt":"2016-12-23T08:22:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.onebigpark.at\/en\/?p=95092"},"modified":"2026-03-10T11:50:56","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T10:50:56","slug":"tauern-cycle-trail-questions-and-answers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.salzburgerland.com\/en\/tauern-cycle-trail-questions-and-answers\/","title":{"rendered":"Tauern Cycle Trail &#8211; Questions and Answers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Tauern Cycle Trail Circuit or from Krimml to Passau?<\/h2>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span title=\"Der \u201eklassische\u201c Tauernradweg Krimml \u2013 Passau f\u00fchrt von den Krimmler Wasserf\u00e4llen gro\u00dfteils entlang der Salzach bis Salzburg und weiter flussabw\u00e4rts bis zur \u201eSalzach-Inn-M\u00fcndung\u201c.\">The \u201cclassic\u201d <strong>Tauern Cycle Trail from Krimml to Passau<\/strong><\/span><\/span> runs from the Krimmler waterfalls, mostly along the Salzach, to Salzburg and further downstream to the \u201cSalzach \u2013 Inn \u2013 mouth\u201d. <span title=\"Die letzte Etappe f\u00fchrt entlang des Inns bis Passau.\">The last stage leads along the Inn to Passau. <\/span><span title=\"Insgesamt kann man hier 310 Kilometer radelnd zur\u00fccklegen. \">All in all, you can cycle 310km.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span title=\"Die Tauernradwegrunde beginnt ebenfalls bei den Krimmler Wasserf\u00e4llen.\">The <strong>Tauern Cycle Trail Circuit\u00a0<\/strong>starts<\/span> at the Krimmler waterfalls. <span title=\"Bis Salzburg sind die Radfahrer auf derselben Strecke entlang der Salzach flussabw\u00e4rts unterwegs.\">Up until Salzburg, cyclists travel downstream on the same route along the river Salzach. <\/span><span title=\"Ab hier f\u00fchrt die \u201eRunde\u201c aber nun flussaufw\u00e4rts entlang der Saalach \u00fcber Bad Reichenhall, Lofer und Saalfelden nach Zell am See \u2013 ohne gro\u00dfe Steigungsstrecken.\">From here on, the \u201ccircuit\u201d runs along the Saalach via Bad Reichenhall, Lofer and Saalfelden to Zell am See \u2013 without any large climbs. <\/span><span title=\"Von Zell am See bringt die Pinzgauer Lokalbahn die Radfahrer zur\u00fcck nach Krimml.\">From Zell am See the Pinzgauer local railway brings cyclists back to Krimml. <\/span><span title=\"Da es eine Rundstrecke ist, kann der Ausgangspunkt frei gew\u00e4hlt werden, zum Beispiel auch Salzburg oder Zell am See.\">Since it is a circular route, the starting point can be chosen freely, for example in Salzburg or Zell am See. Doing t<span title=\"Die Befahrung der Runde wird gegen den Uhrzeigersinn empfohlen, da so die beiden Steigungsstrecken im Salzachtal \u201eangenehmer\u201c sind.\">he<\/span> round trip in a counterclockwise direction is recommended to make the two slopes in the Salzach Valley \u201cmore pleasant\u201d. <\/span><span title=\"Die L\u00e4nge der Tauernradwegrunde betr\u00e4gt insgesamt 270 Kilometer.\">The length of the\u00a0<span title=\"Die Befahrung der Runde wird gegen den Uhrzeigersinn empfohlen, da so die beiden Steigungsstrecken im Salzachtal \u201eangenehmer\u201c sind.\">Tauern Cycle Trail<\/span> Circuit is a total of 270 kilometres.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Is the\u00a0Tauern Cycle Trail also suitable for children?<\/h2>\n<p><span><span lang=\"en\">Yes. Above all, the great number of (natural) attractions and bathing lakes along the route provides plenty of variety. For the partial route between Werfen and Golling (17km) \u2013 here the cycle trail partly still runs along the main road due to the narrowness of the valley \u2013 you can jump on the train which runs parallel to it. <span>Or you can choose the route between Bruck \/ Zell am See and Salzburg through the Saalach valley. <\/span><\/span><\/span>The Tauern Cycle Path and the alternative route via the B311 will be closed to cyclists from the end of March 2026 due to the risk of rockfall between Frohnwies and the Die\u00dfbach power station. From the end of March 2026 (as in the 2025 summer season), a free shuttle bus will operate as a replacement to enable cyclists to bypass this area safely and free of charge. The bike shuttle is expected to run again until the end of October 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Where can I book tour packages for the Tauern Cycle Trail?<\/h2>\n<p><span>Almost all large cycle tour organisers have the Tauern Cycle Trail in their programmes. Accommodation offering this service are marked separately in the free Tauern Cycle Trail Folder. <span>Here you can download the <a href=\"https:\/\/issuu.com\/salzburgerland\/docs\/tauernradweg_brosch_re_2022?fr=sMmQ1MDMzODQxNTc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tauern Cycle Trail Folder<\/a>\u00a0in pdf format (german) with all cycle-friendly companies.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Should I pre-book accommodation?<\/h2>\n<p><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span>It is recommended to book your first accommodation as soon as your arrival day is fixed.<\/span> <span>If you only reserve your accommodation on the same day, you can be on the road, depending on your desire, mood and the weather.<\/span> <span>As a rule, a sufficient number of free rooms are still available.<\/span> <span>Only in the high season might it be \u201cscarce\u201d, for example, during the Salzburg Festival season in the City of Salzburg in the middle of July \/ August \u2013 in this case we suggest booking a room in advance.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In the early afternoon (2 p.m. to 3 p.m.), think about how far you want to cycle that day and call the accommodation of your choice or the tourist office in the next town.<\/span> <span>The tourist office usually has a good overview of accommodation still available in that town.<\/span> This way, <span>you can enjoy the rest of your day\u2019s cycling!<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Cycle-friendly companies and all tourism associations along the route are listed in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salzburgerland.com\/de\/shop\/rad\/tauernradweg-folder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span><span id=\"result_box\" lang=\"en\"><span>Tauern Cycle Trail Folder<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a> (german) which can be ordered free.<\/p>\n<h2>Where do I find Bike Rental and Repair Facilities?<\/h2>\n<p><span>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/regio.outdooractive.com\/oar-tauernradweg\/en\/tours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tour guide<\/a> you will find all these shown per stage on the map. In almost all regions along the Tauern Cycle Trail you can also rent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salzburgerland.com\/en\/e-biking-tauern-cycle-trail\/\">E-Bikes<\/a><\/span>,<span> as well as in the majority of packages from the cycle tour organisers (see above list)<\/span><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Can I take my bike along on the train? Is there a return transfer from Passau or Salzburg to Krimml?<\/h2>\n<p><span>Trains to Salzburg and Zell am See: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oebb.at\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.oebb.at<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Trains from Zell am See to Krimml:\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinzgauerlokalbahn.at\/content\/website_pinzgauerlokalbahn\/en_uk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">www.pinzgauerlokalbahn.at.<\/a> Current<\/span> info: During the severe storms of Summer 2021, the route of the Pinzgauer Lokalbahn was partially undermined and damaged. Therefore, the railway line between Mittersill and Krimml is not passable until further notice, also during the summer season 2026. Between Mittersill and Krimml, a rail replacement service with buses has been set up, but they cannot take bicycles with them. There are however two exceptions here \u2013 from 01.05. to 30.09.2026, the trains\/bus connections at 15:02 and 17:02 (each from Zell am See) can each transport bikes to Krimml but only by reservation the day before (until 2:00 pm) on Tel.: +43 6562 40600 or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pinzgauerlokalbahn.at\/content\/website_pinzgauerlokalbahn\/en_uk.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pinzgauerlokalbahn@salzburg\u2013ag.at<\/a>. An alternative bicycle transport option from Zell am See or Mittersill to Krimml is possible, for example, via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taxi-altenberger.at\/en.php?lang=EN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Radtaxi Altenberger<\/a>, Tel.: +43 664 4582717, taxi-altenberger@sbg.at.<\/p>\n<p>A daily bus transfer from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salzburgerland.com\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/bus-transfer-schardingpassau-krimml-2025-parking_engl-1.pdf\">Sch\u00e4rding\/Passau<\/a> to Krimml offers Austria Bike Tours daily from 14th May to 4th October depending on the space available. Departure is at 2 p.m. from Passau main station (mk hotel) and at 2.30 p.m. in front of the Austria Radreisen office (Joseph-Haydn-Str. 8) in Sch\u00e4rding. All information can be found at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.austria-radreisen.at\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">www.austria-radreisen.at.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Is the Tauern Cycle Trail also suitable for Road Bikes?<\/h2>\n<p>Yes. For some non-asphalted sections you will need to divert onto the main road. Here are the relevant key sections:<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Krimml to Bruck approx. 65km:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Start Krimmler Waterfalls to Wald (directly through the town centre) to Neukirchen am Gro\u00dfvenediger: L113 and B165<\/li>\n<li>Hollersbach to Mittersill: B165<\/li>\n<li>Guesthouse Salzachbr\u00fccke (between Kaprun and Zell am See) to Bruck: on asphalted street on the northern shore of the Salzach<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Bruck to Bischofshofen to Salzburg approx. 100km:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Bruck to Taxenbach: on the Salzburger Street (L257) from Bruck and mainly on the accompanying cycle trail to B311<\/li>\n<li>Schwarzach to St. Johann: L274 and B311<\/li>\n<li>St. Johann to Bischofshofen: from the north of Salzachbr\u00fccke on the eastern side of the Salzach via the Venediger street and the old main road to Urreiting and then on the L269 to Bischofshofen<\/li>\n<li>Kreuzberg Toll (= junction of B99 in B159) \u2013 Werfen: B159 (partial accompanying cycle trail)<\/li>\n<li>Pass Lueg to Golling directly on the B159 into the town centre of Golling and onto the Salzachbr\u00fccke<\/li>\n<li>Rehhofsiedlung (north of Hallein) to Salzburg: Schloss street up to Br\u00fcckenwirt in Rif &gt; B159 &gt; Anif Crossing &gt; straight ahead on the L201 to Salzburg\/Nonntal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Salzburg to Lofer to Bruck approx. 100km:<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none\">\n<ul>\n<li>Bayerisch Gmain to Bad Reichenhall: Gro\u00dfgmainer Street and on the B20 to Bad Reichenhall<\/li>\n<li>Bad Reichenhall to Schneizlreuth to Melleck\/Steinpass: B21, near Melleck but on the old main road to the Steinpass<\/li>\n<li>Unken to Lofer: B178 (partial accompanying cycle trail)<\/li>\n<li>St. Martin near Lofer \u2013 Wei\u00dfbach near Lofer: B311 (partial accompanying cycle trail);\u00a0the Tauern Cycle Path and the alternative route via the B311 will be closed to cyclists from the end of March 2026 due to the risk of rockfall between Frohnwies and the Die\u00dfbach power station.
