It takes you through some of the most important salt production places in the area, and you will encounter their traditions and cultural testaments. Salt is also referred to as ‘white gold’, and has shaped the history of the Chiemsee-AlpenLand, Tennengau and Salzkammergut regions over thousands of years. In Tennengau the walking route will take you through the districts of Hallein-Bad Dürrnberg, Kuchl, Golling, Scheffau, Abtenau, Annaberg and Russbach, which prove to be real highlights of the hiking trail.

© SalzburgerLand Tourismus, Michael Grössinger – Hiking on the Königsweg

Königsweg

On this walk from Alpine hut to Alpine hut you will have the continuous impressive panoramic view of the legendary and majestic Hochkönig massif in front of you. It’s not only this imposing mountain range, but all areas you pass are a true delight of this tour. Mühlbach, a former mine village, has countless treasures in its rocks, Dienten of the countless fables, and Maria Alm as a place of pilgrimage with the highest church tower of the region. Scaling the peaks of the Hundstein, Schneeberg and Klingspitz mountains are real climaxes of this tour.

Leave your luggage behind

If you want to enjoy walking in SalzburgerLand’s fantastic scenery for a few days but don’t want to carry your luggage around with you, this selection of walking tours is a must. Explore the gorgeous region of Saalachtal, with its areas of Saalbach Hinterglemm, Saalfelden, Leogang, Maria Alm, Dienten, Maishofen, Viehhofen, Lofer, St. Martin, Weissbach and Unken against a fairy-tale backdrop of splendid meadows, rare Alpine flowers, romantic mountain lakes and impressive peaks. Just take your rucksack, a few snacks and your personal things with you, and arrive at your night’s accommodation to find your luggage there waiting for you. During the day you will find many cosy huts, serving delicious regional delicacies, to stop off in at.

Gorge Route, Saalachtalweg

6 stages, a total of 100.97 km and a 5-night stay are the highlights of the Gorge Route in Saalachtal. Along the way you are bound, at times, to stand still entranced and marvelling at the strength and wild beauty of the gorges in contrast with the peace and quiet of the Alpine pastures. At the foot of the Lofer and Leogang stone mountain ranges and at the outlets of the Steinernes Meer, nature has created bizarrely formed cliff faces, raging waterfalls and one of the biggest aquiferous caves in Europe. A particular highlight is the VorderkaserKlamm Gorge between St. Martin and Weissbach. On the way to the gorge, through the Schüttachgraben, you’ll pass by the open-air swimming region in Vorderkaser. If you’ve not got your swimming costume with you, you can at least sit back and relax, dangling your feet in the cool clear waters.

Saalachtaler Höhenweg

In five days you will walk along one of the most beautiful ridge paths of the region and over alpine pastures and peaks. A few climbs can be somewhat demanding, but the panoramic views of the imposing peaks of the Hohe Tauern National Park more than make up for this. You take the route into Leogang and over the Schwarzleotal valley and Spielbergtörl to Hinterglemm and finally to Saalbach. At the end you can enjoy the Alpine Rose path in Viehofen and if you’re an adrenaline junkie, take a delightfully hair-raising ride on the Biberg summer toboggan down to Saalfelden.

Saalachtal Tour

The first 3 days of this walk will be down in the valley between Saalfelden, Maishofen and Maria Alm, and then it will be up in the mountains for days 4, 5 and 6. You’ll have the constant view of the Steinernes Meer massif to accompany you. On the first 3 days you will be able to choose between very easy variants and more challenging variants with greater changes in altitude. The last 3 days of the walking tour are split between easy mountain routes from Hintermoos to Dienten, a walk over glorious Alpine trails from Dienten to Hinterthal and at the end an uphill-downhill route from Hinterthal back to Saalfelden. If you prefer not to do this 6 day/7 night tour you can instead choose a 3 day/4 nights walk, taking individual stages from Saalfelden to Maishofen back to Maria Alm and to the starting point of Saalfelden.

Family Hiking

The very best in family hiking awaits on 6 days of walking and 7 nights of accommodation. You can tailor your own itinerary taking the stamina, age and fitness levels of family members into account. Take the Gorge Route and discover the 3 themed paths in Saalachtal which keep visitors entertained with their interactive stations, exhibitions and sensory stations.
