A fabulous summer\u2019s day! \u201cPerfect for relaxing at the lake. Simply leave all your cares behind and if it gets too hot, just leap into the glass-clear lake water,\u201d the voice of cosiness whispers from my right shoulder. \u201cNo you don\u2019t. It\u2019s a perfect day for hiking! Exercise is good for you and the endless view will be reward enough for the distance covered,\u201d the voice from my left shoulder protests. I laugh and shrug my shoulders, shaking both of them off. I\u2019ve already decided. I am going to make both of them happy, not least me! Today I\u2019m going on the \u201c4 Lakes Art Hike\u201d<\/a> on the Schmittenh\u00f6he mountain in Zell am See. I\u2019ve got my hiking boots on and my backpack is full of snacks and a bikini. As the name suggests, this is a free weekly guided hike from the summit of Schmitten along the picturesque reservoirs down into the valley.<\/p>\n

Conquering the summit in style<\/h2>\n

I meet Resi the hiking guide and the other participants at the Schmittenh\u00f6hebahn valley station. We already have the tickets for the ascent in our pockets and Resi gives us an art folder with descriptions of the works of art along the route. The modern Schmittenh\u00f6hebahn cable car, designed by Porsche Design, helps us conquer the 1,000 metres in altitude up to the peak comfortably and in style. \u201cWe\u2019re from Luneburg Heath and are hiking novices,\u201d the couple from North Germany admits, but Resi reassures them that they will easily be able to manage the roughly four-hour hike.
\nAs soon as we get to the summit, we first enjoy the 360 degree view of the snow-capped peak of High Tauern, the gentle tips of the Pinzgau grass mountains and the karstic slopes of Steinernes Meer. After taking just a few steps downhill along the hiking trail we see the first artistic installation with the name \u201cLieber Waldbesucher\u201d (\u201cDear Forest Visitor\u201d) and Resi explains how the outdoor gallery came about, \u201cSchmitten is not only a family mountain but since 2014 it is also the first \u2018art and culture mountain\u2019 in Austria. We will get to admire some of the 30 oversized sculptures by international artists along our route. These sculptures, which you can also read about in the \u2018Art on the mountain\u2019 art folder, originated in the annual artist symposiums here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t
