At the foot of the Lower Tauern lies this mountain village, as it says in the book: Lessach in the holiday region of Lungau. This idyllic village is one of the highest and smallest mountain farming villages in Austria. The variety of recreational activities seems unlimited and the hospitality of the villagers is certainly something special. Lessach Specialities:<\/strong><\/p>\n Head up high: in Lessach there are the highest mountain farmers in Salzburgland at 1,440 metres above sea level.<\/p>\n Attractions: the Lessacher cemetery with its grave chests is the only one of its kind in the world and especially significant. The graves are, regardless of status or origin, identically designed as per the phrase \u201cAll people are equal before God\u201d.\u00a0 The graves, made from darkly painted Larch wood, also known also as Sarchen, differ from each other only by the individual proverbs written on them. Cast iron crosses adorn the resting places.<\/p>\n Inspired by morbidity, the bones of the deceased are preserved in the bone-house next to the church. The bones were taken out of the graves as per earlier practices when the cemetery was full. Every skull in the bone-house is without decoration or art, in order to demonstrate the equality of man.
