The most beautiful Christmas markets

World famous, small, authentic Christmas markets provide the Christmas atmosphere in SalzburgerLand

The Advent time in SalzburgerLand is a very special time, characterised by waiting for the Baby Jesus and numerous traditional customs. A visit to one of the many atmospheric Christmas markets in SalzburgerLand is like dipping into a Christmas wonderland and awakens often long-forgotten childhood memories. The finest Christmas baking, the seductive scent of roasted almonds, hot chestnuts and fresh toffee apples, shiny Christmas tree ornaments and cosy kids’ bakeries, deliver the Christmas cheer to both big and small.

World-famous Christmas markets, such as the Salzburg Christmas Market at the Cathedral and Residenz Squares, pull in thousands of visitors every year from near and far in their magical spell. Despite its size, this Christmas Market is a place where real Salzburg folk culture with its traditions is lived and maintained. In addition to the high-quality range of the many Christmas decorated stalls, from arts and crafts to the culinary art, an extensive offering provides the Christmas atmosphere. Throughout the county, there are also many small markets boasting homely atmosphere and authentic traditions.

Traditions at Advent

The impressive sound from the best brass sections in the county can be heard in the traditional trumpet fanfares at the Salzburg Christmas Market. This brass fanfare event was first staged in 1952 by Tobi Reiser and the musicians deliver a special acoustic Advent magic from the Bell Tower, the Christmas Museums’ terrace and from the Cathedral arches. This brass music is an integral part of the cultural framework also at many other Christmas markets. The Christmas story is told by amateur actors during various nativity plays.

Christmas bakeries and craft workshops

At many Christmas markets, the visitors themselves are active. Together with experienced bakers, they create Christmas baking classics such as cinnamon stars, vanilla crescent biscuits, Linzer eye biscuits and fruity Christmas bread. Of course, these fragrant biscuits are then enjoyed with a cup of Glühwein (mulled wine). The traditional Advent wreath is braided by skilled hands from pine needles and adorned with four candles – one for each Sunday in Advent. With these traditions, one can prove themselves and their craftsmanship, and be en-wrapped in the art of the Advent time. Kids especially love to craft straw stars and Christmas tree ornaments out of felt, while the Christmas fairy tales deliver great anticipation for Santa Claus to both big and small visitors at the Advent markets.
