Advent & Traditions
Enjoy the music of the traditional “Turmblasen”, brass band musicians playing an array of Christmas melodies at the Salzburg Christmas Market. It was in 1952 that this tradition was initiated when Tobi Reiser and his musicians first played in the bell tower. Brass bands playing carols are today an integral part of nearly every Christmas market, as is the re-enactment of the nativity by amateur actors.
Christmas Bakery and Creative Workshops
Many visitors like to play an active role at a Christmas market. Together with experienced bakers you will be able to try your hand at making an assortment of Christmas biscuits, such as “Vanillekipferl”, “Linzeraugen” or maybe a “Kletzenbrot” (a fruit filled cake). Whilst the biscuits are baking, indulge your taste buds and enjoy a hot spicy glühwein. The traditional Advent wreath is braided by the nimble hands of experts and decorated with four candles, one of which is lit on each Sunday during Advent. Again, you have the chance to make your own garland under the instructions of the experts. Children will especially enjoy making straw stars and Christmas tree decorations from felt. These magical hours are a perfect lead up to the coming of Christmas and of course Father Christmas!
