BLAU:

EASY:
Easy hiking trails in permanently inhabited areas and neighboring woodlands, leading through flat terrain and with no major gradients along the way.

Special Requirements:
No special requirements, walkable wearing running or street shoes. No special equipment is necessary in order to get about. The trail is navigable without the aid of hiking maps.

ROT: MODERATE:
Hiking trails in the mountains, already requiring a certain degree of surefootedness.  Hikers may encounter steep steps, flowing water, narrows and troughs created by wash-outs.

Special Requirements:
Basic navigation skills are required. Hiking / trekking / mountain boots that extend above the ankle and with a good tread are recommended. A topo hiking map of the area in question is also recommended.
SCHWARZ: DIFFICULT:
Difficult mountain hiking paths and alpine trails, secured in exposed segments by ropes, man-made steps, ladders, chains etc.  These will require use of the hands to move forward and to maintain balance. The trail itself may not always be recognisable as such.  Occasionally exposed stages with a danger of falling, sections of scree and rubble, steep grassy, rocky and cliff terrain.
May occasionally encounter areas of residual snow.

Special Requirements:
Appropriate mountain experience is absolutely necessary. Hikers must be skilled in accurate use of topo maps. Hiking / trekking / mountain boots that extend above the ankle and with a good tread are required. Hikers must be able to negotiate fixed-rope segments, man-made steps and similar features without problem, including during the descent. Hiking poles may prove a hindrance in such instances.
