Saint Rupert

Saint Rupert (also known as Hruodpert, Ruodbert, Ruprecht, Robert) - in Old High German, approximating to "The Glorious One" - was sent by Duke Theodo II as a missionary to Bavaria in the last decade of the 7th century. Up to the point of this mission, he had been Bishop of Worms. In 696, he came to Salzburg, where he founded what is now Austria's oldest abbey, St. Peter's.

This contributed substantially to the growth of today's town on the ruins of the Roman town of Juvavum, which is why St. Rupert is often regarded as the founder of Salzburg.
Bishop Rupert probably died on March 27th, 718, in Salzburg. The veneration of his person began at around the time his remains where transferred to the newly constructed cathedral on Sept.24th, 774.

St. Rupert is regarded as the patron saint of miners within the region which formerly fell under Salzburg's sphere of influence (primarily Traunstein and Berchtesgaden, Bad Reichenhall in Bavaria and the Dürrnberg), while also revered as the patron saint of the SalzburgerLand (a state holiday is celebrated in his honor on Sept.24th).
