Join us as we celebrate and enjoy Lungau Harvest Festival with hikes, Samson parades and dances, mountain masses, hill festivals, Almabtrieb fairs, farmhouse tours, folk-music events
We mark the end of summer grazing season with something we call "Almabtrieb", a time for farmers, hut staff, shepherds and cowherds to give thanks for the safe return of cattle to their winter barns in the valley. The cattle are decked out in their "Sunday best", including twigs, ribbons, mirrors and lots of other "bling"!
Almabtrieb festivities are held every September in St. Michael/St. Martin and in the Nature Park Village of Zederhaus, whilst there is also a similar celebration for the return of the flocks hosted at the Göriach Hut Village in October.
The parade with the giant Samson figure through several different Lungau communities, as well as the so-called Preber Shoot, an annual event on the last weekend in August, are both local traditions during Harvest Festival season - and we couldn't be happier if you joined us! In the Lungau's local heritage museums, there are many fascinating things to see and experience about the Lungau region.
"Eachtling" is Lungau dialect for potato, a quality product that is in high demand far beyond Lungau's borders, one which has garnered Lungau the prestigious title as one of Austria's Genussregionen.
In Mauterndorf and St. Michael, you are even welcome to come dig up your very own potatoes - in dialect we refer to this as "Lungauer Eachtling selber klauben".
Yet another popular meal during Harvest Festival in Lungau is the traditional "Schöpsernes" or "Schåfaufbratl". A roast of mountain-grazed mutton is served in a pan with potato, horseradish, cabbage salad and lingonberries, and generally enjoyed along with a convivial group of fellow diners.
