Aside from museums, pilgrimage churches, old palaces and castles, the Lungau is also home to unique folk traditions:
Probably one of the most beautiful Lungau traditions is our Prangstangen processions, which take place annually on 24 June (Feast of John the Baptist) in Zederhaus and on 29 June (Feast of Peter & Paul) in Muhr. The 6 to 8 meters-high wooden poles are garlanded in fresh flowers from our meadows and alpine pastures. One such Prangstange involves as many as 60,000 flowers and around 300 hours of work. The Prangstangen are carried in a parade, and remain in the parish churches of Zederhaus and Muhr until Assumption Day on August 15.
What an imposing spectacle, as this mighty, gigantic figure is carried through the streets of town. The Samson, heroic biblical figure and emblem of the Lungau, has its origins in the 16th century, and still stands as a symbol of power and strength!
Samson processions take place in Tamsweg, Mauterndorf, Mariapfarr, St. Michael, Muhr, St. Andrä, Ramingstein, St. Margerethen, Wölting and Unternberg on several red-letter days throughout the summer.
This unique target-shooting contest takes place on the shores of the Prebersee, at 1,510 meters above sea level. What makes it so unusual is that, rather than shooting directly at the target, you actually take aim at its reflection in the water. The projectile is deflected off the water surface and, with a little bit of luck, hits the targets which are erected on the shoreline. The Preber Shoot takes place annually on the last weekend in August.
