Cross-Country skiing paradise in Faistenau and Hintersee

Just twenty kilometers from the Mozart city of Salzburg lies the cross-country skiing village of Faistenau-Hintersee. It is one of the best Nordic sports competence centers in the Salzburg region: over 60 top-prepared skating and classic trails, a daily illuminated night trail, as well as many amenities such as changing rooms, showers, free bus connections, dining options, and a cross-country skiing school distinguish the offer. Around five working hours or more are invested daily in maintaining the trail network: The practical traffic light system on the website www.langlaufdorf.at shows the current status of the trails. Live images of the cross-country skiing village can also be viewed via webcams. The infrastructure also includes sufficient parking spaces and a ski rental shop open daily. The use of the trails is subject to a fee, with children and adolescents up to the age of 15 using the trails free of charge.

Advent of the Villages

Charming and traditional, small, fine Christmas markets invite you to the Advent of the Villages. In these towns, the cherished customs are still celebrated in a classic way in December. Particularly in the three villages participating in the “Salzkammergut Advent,” one can experience the atmospheric Advent season. The Advent market at the Guggenthaler Kircherl, the Advent in the Ebenau Brunnengarten, and the Advent under the 1000-year-old lime tree in Faistenau offer everything the heart desires, from enchanting handicrafts to fragrant Advent wreaths and excellent Kletzenbrot.

At these three Christmas markets, as well as in other locations like Fuschl am See, Hof, and Hintersee, there are often serene evenings of music, craft demonstrations, and Krampus runs against the backdrop of impressive natural scenery, such as at Satzstein in Hintersee or at Plötz Waterfall in Ebenau.

“Silent Night! Holy Night! in the Fuschlseeregion

The story of the world’s most famous Christmas carol, “Silent Night! Holy Night!” is inseparable from the Salzburg region. For 10 years, Joseph Mohr served as the assistant priest in Hintersee in the Salzkammergut. Hard times and long winters often brought hardship to the poorer rural population of the serene village. Mohr acted as a savior more than once by purchasing meat from poachers and distributing it among the poorest. Where did the money come from? The collection plate was lightened, and Mohr almost ended up in prison for these Robin Hood-like actions. His priestly robe and several other original pieces from his belongings are on display in Hintersee.

To commemorate Joseph Mohr for his good deeds, the Joseph Mohr House, the Joseph Mohr Memorial Chapel, and the Joseph Mohr Memorial Trail with various stations have been dedicated. As a special highlight, during Advent, the Joseph Mohr Lantern Walks with musical accompaniment take place, where fascinating stories about the Silent Night village of Hintersee and the eventful life of the famous assistant priest of Hintersee are shared.

In both summer and winter, the Fuschlsee region hosts numerous cultural, culinary, traditional, and sporting events!
